Norwest Private Hospital – 11 Norbrik Drive, Bella Vista NSW 2153

Overall: Basic and clean. Nappy change only.

Good Points: Easy to find. Door locks from the inside. Wall mounted, fold out change table. Nappy disposal bin. Sink, soap and paper towels. Toilet with assistance rails.

Bad Points: Nappy bin in awkward position under the change table. Plastic chair not comfy for feeding. Door quite heavy.

Norwest Private is one of the newest hospitals in Sydney, with a very big maternity unit. With this in mind, we were surprised to see such a basic setup in the baby change facilities. While the baby change facilities are easy to find, it’s definitely basic and for nappy changes only – nothing more. If you aren’t staying in the hospital, and don’t have your own room to get some privacy, you’ll have to feed bubs on one of the couches in the waiting areas. BYO covering for you and bub.

On the ground floor, the disabled toilet with baby change table is just near the Hospital Directory sign. The door to the bathroom is quite heavy, so I’m not sure how someone in a wheelchair manages to open it, let alone a parent with a pram in tow. On the plus side, the door does lock from the inside, so at least privacy is assured.

Inside the bathroom, it’s quite basic. There’s the toilet with assistance rails, toilet paper, sink, soap and hand dryer. Just inside the door, to the left, is a plastic chair. This would not be any use at all for feeding. Instead it’d best used for keeping the nappy bag off the floor. The change table is the usual wall-mounted, fold-out variety. It’s clean, with safety straps attached. The nappy bin is tucked underneath, against the wall. This is quite an awkward position, as you can’t get to it until after the change table has been folded away.

For a new hospital with such a big focus on maternity, we were expecting a higher standard in the baby change facilities. A proper parent room, close to the waiting areas, would be ideal. Maybe it’s on the plans for future expansion/upgrades?
