Constitution Hill Library – 20 Hollis Street, Constitution Hill NSW 2146

Overall: Basic, yet clean and in great condition. Nappy change and toilet only.

Good Points: Ramp access. Easy to find bathroom. Wall mounted fold out change table. Toilet with assistance rails. Sink, soap and paper towel. Door locks from the inside. Great lighting. Friendly staff. Great kids reading area.

Bad Points: Not much really, apart from no separate feeding area (but that’s normal in libraries). Mmmmm…….couldn’t find a proper nappy disposal bin.

Constitution Hill Library is just lovely. From being easy to find, loads of street parking, and great staff through to the toilet which is easy to get to (where the baby change table is), it’s just a really lovely library to visit.

For parents with prams, ramp access makes it a breeze to get in here with the kids. And there were loads of kids here! The first Thursday of the month the library has a playgroup – and it’s free! Each week there’s also two different sessions for preschoolers and babies to have special reading times. How good is it?! It’s great to see such high demand for getting babies and little kids into reading.

The kids section of the library is just on the opposite side of the reception/borrowing desk. No having to walk past the grown up sections of the library, trying to keep kids quiet while finding their book section. Just head in the doors, walk straight past the front desk and ta-dah!!! The kids books, movies, comfy chairs and toys are right there.

Some libraries we’ve visited in the past have been staffed by people who really make it clear they do not want to be there, but this is not the case at Constitution Hill. On the day we visited, the computers were down. This would normally turn the calmest person in to a mess, but not here. The staff handled it incredibly well and didn’t complain one bit. They just took it in their stride, still making sure our kids enjoyed every bit of the visit to the library.

Now for the all important baby care facilities. At the front of the library, just inside the main doors to the left, is the combined disabled toilet/baby change room. It’d be tough for double prams to get in, but other than that it’s a pretty good basic facility. It has loads of natural light coming from the side window, and the light switch is on the right of the door on the inside. The door locks from the inside, so you can and your baby can have some privacy. Against the far wall is a clean, wall mounted, fold out baby change table. It’s in good condition too. I don’t remember seeing a proper nappy disposal bin, but there is a general rubbish bin. The toilet has assistance rails, which is very helpful for little ones who are learning to use the loo and need a bit of help staying on there.

For cleaning hands, there is a sink, soap dispenser and paper towel. The soap dispenser is low enough for kids to reach, and the tap is a long handle, flick mixer type. Yay for equipment that makes it easier for kids to learn to do the right thing in the bathroom.

That’s it really. It’s a lovely library with great programs for kids, and a clean bathroom with a change table you can use. Go visit!
