Studleigh Place, Katoomba Street – Katoomba, NSW 2780

Overall: Basic but easy to find. Nappy change and toilets only.

Good Points: Easy to find. Well sign posted. Wall mounted fold out nappy change table. Nappy bin. Adult and child size toilets. Sink, soap and hand dryer. Door locks from the inside.

Bad Points: Narrow doorway. It’s quite cold, so it must be freezing inside in winter. It’s not overly clean, but what public amenities are pristine anyway. Hand dryer rather than paper towel. The sink and soap are a bit out of reach of little hands. No where to sit down and feed baby.

We had the pleasure of heading up the mountains on a weekday, rather than the weekend. Katoomba is so nice and calm to visit on weekdays, it was such a nice visit. On the weekends it’s quite busy with tourists and day trippers, and that can make going there with little ones a bit of a pain in the neck. On a weekday though, it’s a lovely place to be.

Now where is the parent room? Well it’s super easy to find. Halfway down the street on the left, in Studleigh Place, is the public toilets……and parent room! It’s not super flash, but it’s better than nothing and it’s easy to get to.

The doorway is a bit narrow so larger prams, and even double prams would have difficulty getting inside. Once inside though, the room is huge! The door locks from the inside so you can have total privacy. There’s a wall mounted fold out change table on the right wall, with a nappy bin next to it. The table wasn’t that clean, so make sure you give it a wipe down before using it (or BYO change mat to lay on the table underneath bub).

There’s two toilets in here – one adult size and one child size loo. How good is that for a public bathroom?! I love it! The toilets are stainless steel so will be a bit chilly on little bottoms during winter.

There’s a sink, soap dispenser and hand dryer, which is standard. The sink and soap unit are a bit out of reach of little hands, so kids may need some help to use these. Other than that, it’s a pretty good setup.

Something that would be great to add in here is a bench so you can sit down and feed baby. I was thinking about this today, and apart from the local cafes, there really isn’t any place where you can take a break to feed your little ones. You could sit on one of the park benches that are scattered along the footpaths, but then you have to put up with traffic, cigarette smoke etc etc. Hmmm, this could be something for the council to work on when doing the redevelopment of the toilet block in the next year or so.

So there it is! Now you know where to go when you’re in Katoomba. If only there were more towns up the mountains that had something similar (take note Lithgow!).
